We Use Broeker Flour
By Pat Halliburton
What we have here apparently are two advertising giveaways by Chas. Broeker & Co. of Owensboro, Ky. The 6- inch plate by Northwood is the second one I have owned. You can see a picture of the first one I owned on the hookedoncarnival.com page that identifies the plate. I sold that one in 2004 along with all my other glass. The puzzle giveaway was bought on eBay back in the late 90s, when I owned the other plate, but there was no other evidence at the time of where Broeker’s was located so I didn’t know if it was related or not. The puzzle is copyrighted 1896 so I presume it was an earlier giveaway. The plate pictured here and pictured now on the ddoty.com site for the Plate identification there is the start of my new collection having been out of Carnival for about fifteen years. This plate came out of the Owensboro area this year having been stored away in a local antiques dealer’s estate for more than twenty years. I only remembered today to see if I still had the puzzle and there it was with all it’s now verified company documentation. Sometimes things just finally come together!
Above left you see the plate superimposed over the puzzle, the puzzle in the middle, and the patent date to the right.
