Dugan’s Farmyard Bowl Edge Treatments

(It really can make a difference!)

By Hooked on Carnival

When Dugan was making the farmyard bowls the workers must have had fun because it comes in several different edge treatments: 3n1, Diamond, Diamond Ruffled, (ICS) Ice Cream Shape, Ruffled (6 and 8), Square and Square Ruffled. Do you think they even looked at how the chickens were sitting when the bowl was placed into a stand when displayed? I really doubt it, but as collectors we are always looking at how our Farmyard bowls look together – and that is when collectors started seeing the differences. So, auctioneers started helping by telling us what they believe are the edge treatments. Some edge treatments don’t really matter; 3n1, ICS and Ruffled can set in a stand almost any direction. But not Square, Square Ruffled, Diamond or Diamond Ruffled. Let’s see some examples of all the different edge treatments.

3n1 Bowls

This bowl has what collectors call a 3n1 edge and can be put in a holder with the chickens facing whatever direction they want – in this example the ground under the largest chicken is at the bottom. It really is up to the person putting it in the holder as to how they want the chickens to displayed.

ICS Bowls

This ICS shape bowl can be put in a holder with the chickens facing whatever direction they want – in this example the ground under the largest chicken is at the bottom. It really is up to the person putting it in the holder as to how they want the chickens displayed.

6 and 8 Ruffled Bowls

6 Ruffled Bowl                                                                                                                         8 Ruffled Bowl

The 6 or 8 Ruffled can be placed in a plate holder with the chickens facing any direction. Sometimes, positioning the largest chicken slightly off-center helps the bowl sit better, but orientation isn’t important—it remains ruffled regardless. In both examples above the ground under the largest chicken is at the bottom.

Square and Square Ruffled Bowls

                       Square                                                                                                                                 Square Ruffled

When placed in a plate holder, both Square and Square Ruffled must have the ground under the largest chicken’s feet at the bottom to be considered either Square or Square Ruffled.

Diamond and Diamond Ruffled Bowls

                       Diamond                                                                                                                                 Diamond Ruffled

When placed in a plate holder, both the Diamond and Diamond Ruffled bowls must have the ground under the largest chicken’s feet going to a point or ruffle in the ‘diamond’ shape.  As with most edge treatments there are slight variations.

Considering the workers during Dugan’s era, it’s unlikely they focused on the direction of the chickens when shaping hot glass; their priority was simply keeping up with the press operator’s demand for more glass.  Collectors enjoy finding as many variations as possible.
